FW: TipsForSuccess: Proven Ideas Make You Affluent

Proven Ideas Make You Affluent

George was tired of being broke.

Every day was a struggle. "How will I pay my bills? I'm going deeper into debt. I can't afford to buy anything."

So George constantly worked on new ways to make money. "If I could invent a new can opener, all my money problems would be over." "Maybe I could sell funny hats on the Internet." "If I found some investors, I could open a new underwater restaurant."

George had tried a few ideas, such as manufacturing a razor blade that never got dull, building the world's largest tree swing and selling lamps made of salt. All his new ventures had failed. To survive, he had to work at McDonald's as an assistant manager.

George felt he should solve his money problems with new untried ideas. Unfortunately, unproven ideas are often wrong.

Affluence

"Affluence* Attainment, consists of . . . Doing the things that won, not new things untried as yet." -- L. Ron Hubbard
(Affluence: abundance; wealth)

In other words, you cause an affluence, not from new ideas, but from things that have already worked. Even "new" ideas that create wealth are based on several proven ideas.

George decides to try out this approach. He asks himself, "What has made me money in the past?" He lists the following:

* Selling shoes at a store paid $350 per week.

* Selling sunglasses at weekend festivals paid $1000 per weekend.

* Buying old cars, fixing them up and selling them. The last car he restored, a 1961 Ford Mustang, earned $1500 profit with two weeks of work.

* Working at McDonald's pays $560 per week.

George realizes he can go back to his two best-paying jobs immediately: sunglasses and car restoration.

He convinces the sunglass company to give him 200 pairs on credit so he can sell them at an outdoor market that weekend. He then finds a wrecked 1988 Mercedes and makes a deal to buy it for $500, on credit.

George quits his McDonald's job. He makes $800 selling sunglasses that weekend. He spends three weeks on the Mercedes and sells it for $4500.

George uses old, proven ideas to boost his income.

Business Uses

When a business sticks to proven ideas, and avoids untried methods, it usually succeeds.

For example, the owner of an auto dealership notices his car sales are dropping. His marketing director says, "We need a new TV commercial. Let's use elephants! We've never tried it before. It'll be great!"

The smart owner says, "Let's wait on the elephants. Instead, find which of our old commercials worked best. What made our sales jump up?"

The marketing director comes back the next day and says, "I hate to tell you this, but our best TV commercial is that one of you wearing diapers and crying. You swore to never show that commercial again."

The owner says, "I hate that commercial. Oh well, show it again. In fact, buy twice as many time slots! And schedule the film crew to shoot a new commercial with me in the diaper. I'm really going to cry this time!"

Car sales and income jump to new levels.

Doing things that won is essential to good business.

Copying Ideas

If you do not have anything that has made you succeed in the past, do things that worked for others.

For example, you want a career helping people and making a decent income. You write down the careers of everyone you know. You realize your uncle Jay, who is a dentist, helps a lot of people and makes an excellent income. You take your uncle to lunch and ask how he became a successful dentist. You follow his path

As another example, you want a successful marriage and family. You find out who has been happily married for a long time and has a successful family. You learn all you can about what helped them succeed and then copy their success.

If you want to succeed in any kind of job or business, interview the people who are succeeding. Find out what worked for them. Use these ideas as they are proven, not untried as yet. Luckily, most successful people enjoy talking about their success secrets and do not worry about competition.

Doing things that won for you or others is a reliable route to success.

Five Steps to Boost Your Income

1. Make a list of income ideas you are using that are unproven and not working for you.

2. Work out a plan to drop these ideas.

3. Make a list of income ideas that have worked for you or others.

4. Write down how you can use these ideas to boost your income.

5. Once you are earning the income you need, go ahead test new, untried ideas if you like. Just make sure they work before you invest any significant time or money into them.

TipsForSuccess: The Power to Control How People Treat You

You Have the Power to Control How People Treat You

You can make people like you or hate you; respect you or criticize you; support you or chop you down.

You can also get people to trust you, support you and help you succeed.

The way you do this is outlined by L. Ron Hubbard in The Way to Happiness.

“Try to Treat Others as You Would Want Them to Treat You”

“Just figure out how you would want people to treat you.

“You would possibly, first of all, want to be treated justly: you wouldn't want people lying about you or falsely or harshly condemning you. Right?

“You would probably want your friends and companions to be loyal: you would not want them to betray you.”

“You would want people to be fair in their dealings with you.

“You would want them to be honest with you and not cheat you. Correct?

“You might want to be treated kindly and without cruelty.”

“You would probably prefer to be given respect, not insulted.

“Possibly you would want others to be polite to you and also treat you with dignity. Right?

“You might like people to admire you.

“When you did something for them you would possibly like people to appreciate you. Correct?

“You would probably like others to be friendly toward you.

“From some you might want love.

“And above all, you wouldn't want these people just pretending these things, you would want them to be quite real in their attitudes and to be acting with integrity*.”

“It requires no great stretch of imagination for one to recognize that if he were to be treated that way regularly by others around him, his life would exist on a pleasant level.” — L. Ron Hubbard
(*integrity: honesty, truthfulness)

Three Steps to Get People to Treat You the Way You Want to Be Treated

1. Make a list of each person you wish to influence: spouse, children, parents, employees, bosses, co-workers, colleagues and so on.

2. Next to each name, write how you want him or her to treat you.

3. Then write how you will treat that person, in that same way.

In some cases, you might be amazed at how quickly this works. In other cases, you may need to persist for a long time, so don't give up!

TipsForSuccess: Feel Happier Right Now

Feel Happier Right Now

What makes you satisfied and content? Why do you get bored? Where is the joy in life?

“Happiness could be defined as the emotion of progress toward desirable goals. There is an instant of contemplation* of the last goal in which one is content. But contentment becomes boredom immediately that new goals do not come to view. There is no more unhappy thing than a man who has accomplished all his ends in life.” -- L. Ron Hubbard
(*contemplation = thoughtful observation; meditation)

Let's examine three parts of this definition.

1. “There is an instant of contemplation of the last goal in which one is content.”

Think of goals you have reached in the past. How did you feel right after your wedding? When you got your first job? When you graduated from school?

Take a fast second to contemplate the last goal you reached. Perhaps you now feel content?

2. “But contentment becomes boredom immediately that new goals do not come to view.”

For example, planning a vacation is exciting. But toward the end of a vacation many people are bored as they no longer have a goal.

Arguments during honeymoons are common, if the newlyweds do not set goals for their marriage.

Planning your retirement and the first day of retirement is a thrill. But the joy of freedom quickly turns to boredom and early death if you do not work on new goals.

“There is no more unhappy thing than a man who has accomplished all his ends in life.”

Think of a time you were very bored. Had you completed a major goal without starting a new one?

3. “Happiness could be defined as the emotion of progress toward desirable goals.”

We can use this definition to understand unhappiness as well. When were you last unhappy?

In each case, you probably 1) had no goal, 2) were trying to reach an undesirable goal, or 3) you were making no progress toward a goal.

Making yourself happy is not difficult. Simply chose desirable goals and make progress toward them!

Three Steps to Feeling Happier Right Now

1. Select a desirable goal. If you don't have a desirable goal, make one up. What do you really desire?

2. Write down ONE SINGLE THING you can do right now toward this goal. It has to be an action step. Not thinking about it or talking about it. Actual physical motion.

3. Do it! Take that one step right now. Make some small, but real progress. You might be surprised at how easy it is.

Finally, notice if making this little bit of progress makes you happier.

TipsForSuccess: War, Enemies and Politics

War, Enemies and Politics

Your neighbor likes to throw parties. Every Saturday night, his stereo is blasting and the street is full of cars. What do you do?

You probably act logically and work it out. You might talk to the person, report the problem to the police or go to a movie.

However, you would probably not go shoot the neighbor.

What if you feel your business is threatened by another business? Say you own a restaurant, but notice you are getting fewer reservations and your income is going down. You find out the new restaurant down the road is taking your customers.

Do you work on your menu? Improve your service? Advertise? Form a partnership with the other restaurant owner? Enjoy the challenge of a competition? Sell your restaurant?

Probably something like that. But would you throw a bomb into the other restaurant? Kill its employees? Why not? After all, they are threatening your living and hurting your business.

Perhaps if someone killed your friend or a family member, you would want to attack the murderer. But sooner or later, you would realize blood on your own hands was no solution. As any war veteran can tell you, killing people can cause a lifetime of depression.

So why does anyone go to war? What might be a better solution?

Without getting involved in politics, L. Ron Hubbard has always taken a stand against war. Even though he was a decorated Naval officer in World War II, he disagreed that war solved anything.

In 1950, he wrote in his famous book, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health:

"There is no national problem in the world today which cannot be resolved by reason alone.”

"The farmer of Iowa has no quarrel with the storekeeper of Stalingrad. Those who say such quarrels exist lie.”

"How much can man conquer? He loses if he conquers man. He wins if he conquers his own fears and conquers then the stars.

"Attack the natural enemies of man, attack them well, and war of man with man cannot thereafter be a problem. This is rationality."

In another book called All About Radiation, L. Ron Hubbard writes,

"Man has a madness and that madness is called war. That madness really hasn't anything to do with politics.

“The truth is very simple. A government becomes worried about its ability to control its populace and neighbors and resorts to war as a means of compelling obedience at home as well as abroad.

"In actuality, a weakness and insecurity of government causes war. If a government were very strong and felt very secure, it would employ the most peaceful, quiet methods of granting beingness* and getting cooperation from its potential enemies. It wouldn't fight a war. One doesn't find an educated, secure man fighting with his neighbors. No, the person who fights his neighbors is a very insecure and not at all sane man."

(*Granting Beingness: Allowing others to be who they are.)

Three Recommendations

1. Instead of getting into political arguments or attacking people, talk about conquering our common enemies. Choose an enemy of mankind, such as famine, drought, insanity, drug abuse, hatred, illiteracy, disease, crime and so on.

For example, someone says, “Don't you think that (politician/political party) is going to ruin our lives?”

You say, “I don't know about that, but I do think we need to help the teachers in our high schools as most of their kids can't even read!”

2. Whenever you want to attack or hurt someone, work on your own weaknesses and insecurity. Find constructive ways to make yourself more powerful.

For example, instead of trying to ruin one of your competitors, get more training, get advice or work much harder to win the competition.

3. Peacefully and quietly grant beingness to your enemies. Use your strength and intelligence to obtain their cooperation.

For example, your ex-spouse spends hours each week telling people what a rotten person you are. Instead of attacking, you grant your ex-spouse beingness. You decide it's okay for him or her to be whatever he or she wants to be. You then write an intelligent letter asking your ex-spouse to meet to work on a friendlier relationship where no one gets hurt. You persist until you gain your ex-spouse's cooperation.

Suggest the same to others. For example a friend says, “I could choke my neighbor. He's ruining my sleep as his dog won't stop barking. I started throwing rocks last night, but that made it worse.”
You say, “Why don't you send a friendly letter and ask your neighbor to quiet down his dog?”

TipsForSuccess: What Should You Be?

What Should You Be?

Question: What is the best personality or the best identity for you to assume?

Answer: Anything you want to be! A cheerful friend, a businesslike executive, a caring listener. Whatever is best at the time. Different circumstances require different attitudes.

For example, to be a bossy manager at work might be appropriate, but you might drive your spouse crazy if the identity continues at home. To be a rowdy sports fan at a game is great, but not what you should be when asking for a raise.

The reason people have trouble determining who or what they should BE is because they don't start with HAVE.

“Children in the West are commonly asked `What are you going to BE when you grow up?' It is a silly question and can drive any child up the wall. Because it's the wrong question—hits the wrong end of the cycle.”

“He is also asked, `What are you going to DO in life?' That's just as bad. It is quite difficult to answer.”

“If we asked children, `What do you want to PRODUCE in life?' we could probably get a workable answer. From that he could figure out what he'd have to do to produce that and from that he could know what he had to BE. Then, with a little cooperation he would be able to lead a happy and valuable life.”

“A lot of people and businesses fail because they don't do this.” -- L. Ron Hubbard

Example: A young man likes to cook and make people happy. He may decide the product (HAVE) he wants to produce is: “Properly fed, happy people who pay a lot of money for the dining experience at my successful restaurant.”

Based on this decision, he works out his career by listing the steps (DO) which include enrolling in a cooking school, working at several restaurants for the experience, saving money, and so on. His planning is accurate and efficient. The young man then works out the best identity for the job (BE). He needs to BE a successful restaurateur: proud, charming, service-oriented, smart and wealthy.

To put his plan into action, this young man starts the cycle with BE and assumes this identity as the first step. He strolls around BEING a successful restaurateur from day one. He's proud, charming and service-oriented. He even feels wealthy.

He can then easily DO the steps needed to get what he wants to HAVE: a successful restaurant with happy customers. He accomplishes this much faster and more easily than a person who cannot BE a successful restaurateur until he owns the restaurant.

If you want success and wealth, BE wealthy or successful before you get there. It's fun!

Assume a wealthy identity. Test drive a big new Mercedes. Stroll through a $10-million building as if you own it. People will want to be around you. Bankers will try to lend you money. You'll feel great!

Exercise

While this exercise focuses on making money, you can do this with any goal.

1. Take out a blank piece of paper. At the bottom of the sheet, write down how much money you want to earn per month, one year from now.

2. Above the dollar amount write down what you need to produce (HAVE) that someone would pay you that much money for. What final product must you produce that is worth the amount of money you want to earn?

For example, a plumber wants to earn $8,000 per month in profit. He calculates his overhead costs and determines he needs to produce or HAVE “$20,000 per month in high-quality plumbing work to happy customers who refer.”

A dental receptionist who wants to earn $3500 per month might determine she needs to produce much more than “scheduled patients.” She talks to the dentist and decides she needs to produce “a dental practice that doubles in production because of my efforts so I can earn $3500 per month.”

The partners of a law firm decide they want their group to bill and collect $500,000 per month.

What do you need to produce to earn the money you wrote in step 1? Write this down.

3. In the middle of your sheet of paper, write down what you need to DO to reach that level of productivity. This is planning at its finest; you start with the final result and work backwards.

Just before achieving the above product, what will you do? Before that? Before that? Plan your steps from this future point in time back to the present.

For example, the plumber needs to DO more promotional actions, delegate responsibility to his assistants and make sure every customer is completely satisfied.

The dental receptionist needs to organize the schedule better, make more reminder calls to patients and keep the doctor busier.

The law firm needs to hire more associates, attract wealthier clients and win more cases.

4. At the top of the page, write what you need to BE to accomplish the plan and obtain the final product.

The plumber might need to BE a responsible manager and not a fun-loving worker. He may decide he needs to BE a successful business owner.

The dental receptionist needs to BE the boss of the patients' and doctor's time, not just be a receptionist. She needs to BE a successful manager.

The law firm needs to BE the most powerful law firm in town. It moves to the biggest building in town, hires the best decorators money can buy and gives an overwhelming feeling of strength.

Whatever you write at the top of your paper is what you need to BE. It's the most effective identity you can assume. BE THIS PERSON RIGHT NOW.

Now that you are BEING the correct identity for this goal, DO the action steps. You will then HAVE the money or goal.

Use this exercise in other areas of life. For example, to HAVE a successful marriage, what should you DO and BE? What do you need to DO and BE to HAVE a cheerful family, a successful business, a happy life?
