You Have the Power to Control How People Treat You

You can make people like you or hate you; respect you or criticize you; support you or chop you down.

You can also get people to trust you, support you and help you succeed.

The way you do this is outlined by L. Ron Hubbard in The Way to Happiness.

"Try to Treat Others as You Would Want Them to Treat You"

"Just figure out how you would want people to treat you.

"You would possibly, first of all, want to be treated justly: you wouldn't want people lying about you or falsely or harshly condemning you. Right?

"You would probably want your friends and companions to be loyal: you would not want them to betray you."

"You would want people to be fair in their dealings with you.

"You would want them to be honest with you and not cheat you. Correct?

"You might want to be treated kindly and without cruelty."

"You would probably prefer to be given respect, not insulted.

"Possibly you would want others to be polite to you and also treat you with dignity. Right?

"You might like people to admire you.

"When you did something for them you would possibly like people to appreciate you. Correct?

"You would probably like others to be friendly toward you.

"From some you might want love.

"And above all, you wouldn't want these people just pretending these things, you would want them to be quite real in their attitudes and to be acting with integrity*."

"It requires no great stretch of imagination for one to recognize that if he were to be treated that way regularly by others around him, his life would exist on a pleasant level." - L. Ron Hubbard (*integrity: honesty, truthfulness)

Three Steps to Get People to Treat You the Way You Want to Be Treated

1. Make a list of each person you wish to influence: spouse, children, parents, employees, bosses, co-workers, colleagues and so on.

2. Next to each name, write how you want him or her to treat you.

3. Then write how you will treat that person, in that same way.

In some cases, you might be amazed at how quickly this works. In other cases, you may need to persist for a long time, so don't give up!

TipsForSuccess: Instant Happiness

Instant Happiness

You can feel happier in just one minute by first understanding a few important facts.

"Happiness could be defined as the emotion of progress toward desirable goals. There is an instant of contemplation* of the last goal in which one is content. But contentment becomes boredom immediately that new goals do not come to view. There is no more unhappy thing than a man who has accomplished all his ends in life." -- L. Ron Hubbard (*contemplation = thoughtful observation; meditation)

Let's examine three parts of this definition.

1. "There is an instant of contemplation of the last goal in which one is content."

What was the last goal you reached? Do you remember that feeling of contentment?

For example, how did you feel right after your wedding? When you got your first job? When you graduated from school?

2. "But contentment becomes boredom immediately that new goals do not come to view."

For example, planning a vacation is exciting. But toward the end of a vacation many people are bored as they no longer have a goal.

Arguments during honeymoons are common, if the newlyweds do not set goals for their marriage.

Planning your retirement and the first day of retirement is a thrill. But the joy of freedom quickly turns to boredom and early death if you do not work on new goals.

3. "Happiness could be defined as the emotion of progress toward desirable goals."

Making yourself happy is easy! Simply chose desirable goals and make progress toward them.

Three Steps to Feeling Happier, Right Now

1. Select a desirable goal. If you don't have a desirable goal, make one up. What do you want?

2. Write down ONE SINGLE THING you can do right now toward this goal. It has to be an action step. Not thinking about it or talking about it. Actual physical motion.

3. Do it! Take that one step right now. Make some small, but real progress. You might be surprised at how easy it is.

As soon as you take this one step, you'll feel instant happiness.

Try it!

TipsForSuccess: Who Do You Want to Be?

TipsForSuccess.org

Who Do You Want to Be?

Question: What is the best personality or the best identity for you to assume?

Answer: Anything you want! A cheerful friend, a businesslike executive, a caring listener. Whatever is best at the time. Different circumstances require different attitudes.

For example, to be a bossy manager at work might be appropriate, but you might drive your spouse crazy if that identity comes home with you. To be a rowdy sports fan at a game is great, but not who you should be when asking for a raise.

The reason people have trouble determining who or what they should BE is because . . . they don't start with HAVE.

"Children in the West are commonly asked `What are you going to BE when you grow up?' It is a silly question and can drive any child up the wall. Because it's the wrong question -- it hits the wrong end of the cycle."

"The child is also asked, `What are you going to DO in life?' That's just as bad. It is quite difficult to answer."

"If we asked children, `What do you want to PRODUCE in life?' we could probably get a workable answer. From that they could figure out what they'd have to do to produce. And from that, they could know what they had to BE. Then, with a little cooperation they would be able to lead a happy and valuable life."

"A lot of people and businesses fail because they don't do this." -- L. Ron Hubbard

Example: A young man likes to cook and make people happy. He may decide the product (HAVE) he wants to produce is: "Properly fed, happy people who pay me well for a fabulous dining experience at my awesome restaurant."

Based on this decision, he works out his career by listing the steps (DO). His steps include enrolling in a cooking school, working at several restaurants for the experience, saving money and so on. His planning is accurate and efficient. The young man then works out the best identity for the job (BE). He needs to BE a successful restaurateur: proud, charming, service-oriented, smart and wealthy.

To put his plan into action, this young man starts the cycle with BE and assumes this identity as the first step. He strolls around BEING a successful restaurateur from day one. He's proud, charming and service-oriented. He even feels wealthy.

He can then easily DO the steps needed to get what he wants to HAVE: a successful restaurant with happy customers. He accomplishes this much faster and more easily than a person who cannot BE a successful restaurateur until he owns the restaurant.

So if you want success and wealth, BE successful and wealthy before you get there. It not only works, it's fun!

Assume a wealthy identity. Test drive a big new Mercedes. Drive by your dream home. Stroll through a $50-million building as if you own it.

People will want to be around you. Opportunities will pop up. Money will be attracted to you.

You'll feel great!

Exercise

While this exercise focuses on making money, you can do these steps with any of your goals.

1. Take out a blank piece of paper. At the bottom of the sheet, write down how much money you want to earn per month, one year from now.

2. Above the dollar amount write down what you need to produce (HAVE). What will someone pay you that much money for? What final product must you produce that is worth the amount of money you want to earn?

For example, a plumber wants to earn $8,000 per month in profit. He calculates his costs and determines he needs to produce or HAVE "$20,000 per month in high-quality plumbing work to happy customers who refer." If he does this, he will take home $8,000 per month.

A dental receptionist who wants to earn $3,500 per month might decide she needs to produce much more than "scheduled patients." She talks to the dentist and discovers she needs to produce "a dental practice that doubles in production, because of my hard work, so I can earn $3500 per month."

The partners of a law firm decide they want their group to collect $500,000 per month. If they do this, they all get what they want to have.

What do you need to produce to earn the money you wrote in Step 1? Write this down.

3. In the middle of your sheet of paper, write down what you need to DO to reach that level of productivity.

This is planning at its finest; you start with the final result and work backwards.

Just before achieving the above product, what will you do? Before that? Before that? Plan your steps from this future point in time back to the present.

For example, the plumber needs to DO more promotional actions, delegate responsibility to his assistants and make sure every customer is completely satisfied.

The dental receptionist needs to organize the doctor's schedule better, make more reminder calls to patients and keep the doctor busier.

The law firm needs to hire more associates, attract wealthier clients and win more cases.

4. At the top of the page, write what you need to BE to accomplish the plan and obtain the final product.

The plumber needs to BE a responsible manager and not a fun-loving worker. He decides he needs to BE a successful, responsible, cheerful, efficient, passionate business owner.

The dental receptionist needs to BE the boss of the patients' and doctor's time, not just be a receptionist. She needs to BE a successful manager.

The law firm itself needs to BE the most powerful law firm in town. So it moves to the biggest building in town, hires the best decorators money can buy and gives to its clients an overwhelming feeling of strength.

Whatever you write at the top of your paper is what you need to BE. It's the most effective identity you can assume. BE THIS PERSON RIGHT NOW.

Now that you are BEING the correct identity for this goal, DO the action steps. You will then HAVE the money or goal.

And . . .

Use this exercise in all other areas of life.

To HAVE a successful marriage, what should you DO? Based on that, what do you need to BE?

To HAVE a success child, friendship, career, job, body, car, website or whatever, what should you DO? Based on that, what do you need to BE?

To HAVE a happy life, what do you need to DO? Based on that, what should you BE?

The answer to all of this is your correct starting point.

Start!

TipsForSuccess: How Do You Handle Life's Roadblocks?

TipsForSuccess.org

How Do You Handle Life's Roadblocks?

When you are stopped while trying to accomplish something, how do you respond? How do you handle the frustration?

For example, you want to be a professional piano player. You take piano lessons, practice for two hours every day and learn as many songs as possible. You play at a friend's wedding and feel ignored. You audition to play at your church services, but do not get selected. Your mother even says, "Maybe you should take up water colors." What do you do?

Maybe you cry and feel sorry for yourself. "Boo-hoo! I feel so bad!"

Perhaps you blame others. "My teachers were so bad that I'll never succeed."

Or maybe you blame yourself. "I'm such an idiot! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!"

Many people like to drown their sorrows. "To heck with it! I'm getting drunk."

Some prefer depression or apathy. "Life isn't worth living. I'm going to watch TV all day."

Finding excuses is popular. "My fingers were sore." "The music is too old." "People just don't appreciate fine piano playing."

And of course, many people just give up. "I'm not going to play the stupid piano. In fact, piano players are losers."

How do you handle life's roadblocks?

Intention

"Intention is like a landmark."

"If you were traveling through unfamiliar country toward a snow-capped mountain, you would find that you sometimes took a wrong turn, but as long as you could see the mountain, you would make progress toward it. Sometimes obstacles would get in your way. Sometimes they would even hide the mountain from you. But there is one thing that would not happen. You would not forget to look for the mountain. You would know that you could not reach the mountain by forgetting its existence. You would laugh at the idea of forgetting to look for the mountain." -- L. Ron Hubbard

For example, despite the obstacles, you would not lose sight of your goal to be a piano player. You would ignore the losses and stay focused on the goal. "I will become a fabulous pianist! I'm going to take 200 lessons and practice for four hours a day until I make it."

Luckily, using intention is not difficult. Constantly looking for the mountain is easy. You just look! Your feet then follow your eyes.

As another example, you own a restaurant and have the goal of $10,000 profit per month. You figure out you will need 200 happy, satisfied customers per day to reach your goal. You keep this mountain in mind at all times.

One day, your chef calls and says, "I got a better job in New York and I'm leaving today. Good luck to you."

You realize you'll be cooking a lot of food today and feel like closing the doors and going to a movie instead. Yet you look for your mountain. You see 200 happy customers. You intend to reach the goal.

You suddenly remember your mother is a great cook. She has been offering to help out, so you ask her to take over the kitchen for a few days. She agrees and doesn't even want any pay!

You run an ad and hire a new chef by the weekend. You continue hiking up the mountain.

Recommendations

1. Write down your top three goals. If you do not have three top goals, write down three big things you really want.

2. Put these goals where you will see them several times each day. For example, a note taped on your car's dashboard. A note on your computer screen. A postcard in your shirt pocket. A sticker on the inside of your wallet. Anywhere you will constantly see the goal.

3. Every time you get stopped by life's roadblocks, do not get sad. Do not give up. Do not look for excuses. Instead, just look at your goals. Never forget to look for the mountain.

If you constantly look for the mountain, you will persist. You will work to reach it, day and night. You will find the time and energy it takes to reach the top.

No obstacle will be big enough nor strong enough to stop you.
