Addicted to Sugar?

The US Department of Agriculture estimates the average US Citizen consumes 152 pounds of sugar per year -- almost three pounds of sugar each week! How can this be?

Sugar comes in many forms: soft drinks, candy, desserts, fast food and so on. Because sugar is inexpensive, tastes good and is habit-forming, food companies and fast-food restaurants add sugar to their meals whenever possible.

Sugar, like any addictive substance, makes you crave more sugar. For example, a piece of chocolate gives you a little extra energy for an hour or so. As soon as the effect wears off, you feel tired and maybe a little depressed. So to feel perky again, you want another piece of chocolate. You use sugar to solve problems caused by sugar.

Hundreds of scientific studies prove that sugar makes your body store fat. Excessive fat increases your chance of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and death. Sugar hurts your road to success.

In 1972, L. Ron Hubbard wrote the following:

"Sugar is a deceptive thing."

"Sugar, that is supposed 'to produce energy' does so only at the expense of physical health for sugar does not build up a body, it only burns it up."

"The result of a heavy intake of sugar and carbohydrates* is to feel tired all the time -- no pep."

"If one is going to run a car, he has to feed it the right fuel and oil. If one is going to run a body it has to be fed the right food and that has to include protein."

"By eating your hamburger and vegetables and leaving alone the candy bars and cokes, you will begin to build up a head of steam." -- L. Ron Hubbard (*carbohydrates: a food group that includes potatoes, rice, bread and sugar)

Benefits of Not Eating Sugar

When you stop eating your three pounds of sugar each week, you lose weight. Other foods smell and taste better. You feel more energy.

Sugar alters your digestion fluids so the good food cannot digest properly. You can get heartburn, gas or stomach pain. Without sugar, your stomach quickly recovers. Your body also needs less food because you digest it better.

Without sugar, you get longer lasting energy. You no longer have brief peaks of energy that require a constant flow of sugar to maintain.

Hyperactive children, who are candidates for Ritalin or Prozac, are often calmer and saner when they no longer eat sugar. After you cut off their sugar supply, they will probably demand sweet snacks for a few days, but they eventually relax. They may also lose their mood swings, tantrums and craziness.

Ten Tips for Breaking the Sugar Habit

Like children, after you stop eating sugar, you might feel irritable and tired for 3-6 days. You may have headaches and feel foggy. You will most certainly crave foods that contain sugar.

However, the cravings and symptoms pass. Kicking a sugar addiction is tough, but not as tough as breaking an addiction to cigarettes, drugs or alcohol. You just control your hand so it does not put sugar in your mouth.

These suggestions may help.

1. Recognize that sugar is addicting and therefore controlling you to a degree. For example, if you cannot work or relax without eating sugar, you are addicted. Do you like being addicted to a substance? Make the decision to break the habit.

You have the power to control your craving for sugar. No temptation is stronger than your personal willpower and self-determinism.

2. Find and eat sugar-free substitutes to satisfy the urge to eat food with sugar. For example, fresh fruits and vegetables can stop the craving for sugar and fruit juice is a great sweetener.

3. Prepare your own food instead of eating prepared foods that contain sugar. These foods usually contain sugar: canned soup, store bread, fast-food restaurant food, salad dressing, sauces, gravy, cough drops, sushi rice, protein bars, flavored yogurt and breakfast cereals.

4. Read the ingredients label on the foods you buy. Sugar comes in many forms and is called many names including corn syrup, honey, maltose, dextrose, fructose, lactose and glucose.

5. Try healthy foods you have never tried to add variety and interest to your diet. For example, a new type of fish, exotic vegetables or tasty cheeses.

6. Exercise. Heat up your muscles, stretch out your skin and fill your lungs with fresh air every day. Strengthen your ability to control your body.

7. Use a gradual approach. If you make too many changes to your diet at once, the shock may force you to give up on your decision. You may get better long-term results if you make one change, get used to the change, make another change, get used to it and so on.

8. Get creative with your food. For example, buy a yogurt maker, ice cream maker or a juicer to prepare your own sugar-free snacks and drinks. Explore a health-food store. Try a natural foods restaurant.

9. Try different combinations of vitamins until they help stop sugar cravings and make you feel healthier. For example, 500 milligrams of vitamin C might calm you down or might pep you up.

10. Work out your own program and to start, change or stop your eating habits with the free TipsForSuccess coaching website: www.tipsforsuccesscoaching.org.

Taking control of your food is satisfying by itself. You are no longer controlled by the need for sugar. You burn off the fat and move closer to your ideal weight.

Even if you just cut your weekly sugar intake from 2-3 pounds to 1-2 ounces, you will enjoy long-lasting energy, fewer mood swings and better health.

Your success will be easier to achieve.

TipsForSuccess: How to Make a Fresh Start

How to Make a Fresh Start

Nothing can ruin your success faster than personal conflicts. Upsets between business partners or battles between bosses and staff can ruin productivity, reduce income and build up stress.

Most people have good intentions, most of the time. They want to get along, do their work and succeed. Yet personal upsets can make good people into monsters.

How Do You Deal with Personal Conflicts?

Imagine you get promoted to a management position at work. You now have five employees who answer to you. Four of them are supportive and friendly. Yet the fifth person, Dick, is a problem.

Dick is not cheerful with you. He smiles around his coworkers, but frowns and gets serious when you show up. He never looks you in the eye.

One day, a customer complains about Dick. After you make the customer happy, you call Dick into your office. You say, "So what happened with that customer?"

Dick says, "He's just a jerk. Take his side if you want. I don't care. I'm going back to work, OK?"

What do you do?

Let Dick leave your office and pretend there is no problem?

Get angry at him and chew him out?

Plead with him to be nice to you?

Demand he tell you what is wrong?

A Better Approach

The real problem may be that you have not formed a working relationship with Dick. You need to apply the Non-Existence Formula so your relationship can have a good, solid existence.

"The Non-Existence Formula is:

"1. Find a comm [communication] line.

"2. Make yourself known.

"3. Discover what is needed or wanted.

"4. Do, produce and/or present it." -- L. Ron Hubbard

Since you already have the communication line as Dick is sitting in front of you, you can now do steps 2 and 3.

You say, "Dick, before we deal with this customer, I'd like to get our relationship off to a good start. As you know, I'm now in charge here and you are working for me. What do you need or want from me as your boss?"

Dick looks startled. "What do you mean?"

"I want to know the best way to work with you. What do you need or want from me?
"

Dick shrugs and says, "Okay. I like to know what is going on. For example, nobody told me you were taking over."

You say, "Oh really! That's not good. I'm sorry no one told you. As your new boss, I'll be happy to tell you what's going on. I have no secrets. What else do you need and want from me?"

Dick relaxes and says, "I like to handle customers myself. If a customer complains, I'd like a shot at handling him before you step in. No one lets me do this."

You say, "No problem. From now on, when a customer complains, I'll give you one chance to fix the problem yourself."

Dick starts to look interested. "I want to go to lunch at 12:30 instead of noon. I want a little more air conditioning. And I want someone to listen to my new ideas of how we can make more sales."

All of this is fine with you.

You say, "Now let me tell you what I need and want from you. I need a daily update on what you are doing. I want you to beat your own sales records. I also want you to be friendly to me. Can you do these things?"

Dick's eyes sparkle as he says, "No problem!" He smiles, sticks out his hand and you shake on it.

You and Dick then discuss the customer complaint. Dick says he'll call him and make sure everything is okay.

Dick gets back to work and tells a coworker, "No one from management has ever asked me what I wanted. We might have a good boss here!"

Ten Great Uses of the Non-Existence Formula

1. You start a new job of any kind. You meet with everyone you will be working with individually. You tell each of them about your new position and ask what they need or want from you. As you deliver these needs and wants, you quickly take control of your job.

2. You are in a conflict with your boss. You realize neither of you are doing what the other needs or wants. You arrange a meeting (comm line) and do the next two steps. "Joe, as your newest employee, I want to do a perfect job. Can we go over specifically what you need and want from me?"

With a coworker you say, "Jill, we're stuck with each other. I think we should work things out so we get along. What do you need and want from me as your coworker?" "Can I tell you want I need and want from you?"

3. You want to be hired for the perfect job. During the job interview you ask. "If you hire me, what will you need or want from me?" Since no one else has asked, the boss is a little startled by the question, but really enjoys answering it. You explain how you can deliver these needs and wants . . . and more. You get the job on the spot.

4. You want to rent a building space or apartment, but there are several other applicants who also want the space. So when turning in your application, you ask the landlord, "If you select me as your tenant, what will you need and want from me as my landlord?" The landlord thinks it over and tells you her needs and wants. No one has ever asked her and she's delighted someone cares. You assure her you can deliver. You are selected above all other applicants.

5. You want your boss to sell you a partnership in his company. You say, "I think you have a great operation here. If you were going to sell a partnership, what might you need and want from a partner?" The boss starts to think about it and mentions a few things. You start to do things he would need from a partner. After a while, he makes you an offer to become a partner.

6. You're dating someone and want to take your relationship to the next level. You find out what this person needs or wants from a mate. You decide if you can do those things or not. If you can, you start to deliver. He or she feels a strong attraction to you and wants to take the relationship to the next level.

You also make it clear to this person what you need and want from the relationship. You observe if he or she can do those things for you. If not, you break it off. If he or she can deliver, you go for it!

7. Your marriage is not going well. You ask your spouse, "I want us to have a really good relationship. I think we need a fresh start. Do you agree?"

If your spouse agrees, you ask each other, "What do you need or want from me as your spouse?"

8. Your child is starting in a new school. You visit the school and ask the teacher, "What do you need or want from me?" "What do you need and want from my child?" Your child starts off on the right foot.

9. You are constantly looking for the needs or wants of your customers. For example, a superior cab driver not only finds out the passenger's destination, he asks, "Are you comfortable? Would you like to see today's newspaper? Can I tell you anything about our city?"

An electronics store does the same thing by surveying its customers every month to find out what they want to buy. An orthodontist asks each new patient for his or her needs and wants before starting the first exam. A computer programmer asks users what they need or want from their computers.

Any successful person or business constantly finds out what its clients or customers need or want. And delivers them.

10. You want to form a great relationship with the new leaders of your group. You say, "Hi. I'll be working under you as the ______ and want to know what you need and want from me." As a result, you will get the best treatment from the new leader.

Do you know anyone with whom you should apply these four steps, to establish or improve your work or personal relationship?

TipsForSuccess: How to Increase Your Production by Handling Distractions

TipsForSuccess.org

How to Increase Your Production by Handling Distractions

Have you ever ended a very busy day only to realize you accomplishing nothing? You were probably distracted.

Ever wonder why you feel frustrated at work? Distractions might be stopping you.

Ever feel stress? Distractions may be the cause.

Distractions are not just irritating, they are destructive forces that ruin your productivity. Examples: Chatty coworkers, personal problems, sunny days, rainy days, Facebook, holidays, earthquakes, debts, political news, salespeople, money concerns, health problems and more.

How do you handle distractions?

You get organized.

"THOSE INDIVIDUALS OR AREAS THAT ARE THE LEAST WELL-ORGANIZED ARE AFFECTED THE MOST BY DISTRACTIONS." -- L. Ron Hubbard

A well-organized business understands distractions and organizes to deal with them.

For example, a key worker calls in sick. In a well-organized group, the manager calls in a temporary worker from an agency, gives the worker a written list of instructions and everyone gets their work done. A poorly-organized group discusses the problem for 20 minutes without coming to a solution. The group members are then distracted all day because they have to do the missing worker's job.

When a well-organized business owner gets a legal notice, he or she delegates the problem to a lawyer and focuses on making a prosperous day. A poorly-organized business owner drops everything and worries about it all day.

Well-organized groups handle emergencies, disasters and sudden increases in production without breathing hard. Poorly-organized groups are overwhelmed by them.

Personal Organization

Organizing your personal life so you are not distracted boosts your productivity and income!

For example, you don't need to talk to everyone who calls you and it's silly to read every piece of e-mail or every electronic message when it comes in.

If you are organized, your communications are organized so you only receive information that is relevant to your job. Except for emergencies, you ignore family problems, personal problems and even your health problems. All superior producers do this and are not easily distracted. While working, nothing is more important than the work itself.

If your car won't start, your computer crashes or other small disaster occurs, you have backup plans. You are organized and not distracted by these problems. You get your work done despite everything that gets in your road.

How to Get Better Organized

1. Write down five of your biggest distractions or potential distractions.

2. Next to the first distraction, write down how you can get organized so you are not affected by the distraction.

3. Do the same for the other items on the list.

4. Follow your plans and get organized!

5. Write down permanent rules or policies for yourself or your work so you stay organized.

Personal examples: "I will only take personal calls during my lunch hour." "If I get hungry during the afternoon, I will chew gum and keep working until 5:00." "If Joe tries to upset me, I will pretend he is three years old, not get into an argument and get back to work."

Business examples: "If someone asks me to do their job, I will ask them for their pay." "If you have a suggestion for the company, please e-mail all the details to me." "Each summer, we will do the following program to keep our sales up, despite the vacations."

Because you are well-organized, you make faster progress toward your goals and ultimate success as you are not easily distracted.

TipsForSuccess: The Root of a Successful Marriage

TipsForSuccess.org

The Root of a Successful Marriage

"You want to know why somebody is failing consistently in his marriage. It's because he's unwilling to take responsibility for others than himself." -- L. Ron Hubbard

People who do not take responsibility for others have failed marriages as well as failed jobs, failed businesses and failed friendships.

Because they are unwilling to take responsibility for their mates or spouses, they say things like:

1. "I was so stupid to marry you!"
2. "He's your kid, not mine."
3. "That's the dumbest career choice you've ever made."
4. "You're really getting fat."
5. "Can you please SHUT UP?"
6. "If you had checked the car's oil like I said, it wouldn't need all these repairs."
7. "You can't communicate."
8. "My husband didn't show up for work? Not my problem."
9. "My wife maxed out the credit cards, so she can pay them, I won't."
10. "I'm sick of hearing about your problems."

A marriage is miserable when the husband and wife are unwilling to be responsible for each other. They argue, fight, blame, criticize, scream and cry. The marriage ends in divorce.

The Responsible Marriage

"The willingness to take responsibility for somebody other than yourself is at the root of every successful marriage." -- L. Ron Hubbard

When you take responsibility for someone else, you accept their actions as your own. You care for the person, guard the person, help the person and are interested in the person. You accept the person as he or she is.

When you are willing to take responsibility for your mate, you say things like:

1. "We made a good decision to get married. I think we'll make it better and better."
2. "He's our kid and I love him."
3. "If that's the career choice you want to make, I'll support you on it."
4. "Let's work together and both lose weight. How about if we both stop eating junk food?"
5. "Sorry, I can't listen to you right now, but will in a minute."
6. "Oops! We forgot to watch the car's oil. I'll get it fixed tomorrow."
7. "We need to fix our communication. Is it okay with you if we turn off the TV and listen to each other."
8. "My husband didn't show up for work? I'll find him and one of us will call you right back."
9. "We maxed out the credit cards and we'll pay them off."
10. "What can I do to help you?"

A marriage is joyful when the husband and wife take responsibility for each other. They create a happy home for themselves and their children. They stay in love.

TipsForSuccess: Boost Your Income by Attracting More Attention

TipsForSuccess.org

Boost Your Income by Attracting More Attention

"Money flows toward points which attract prosurvival attention. You make as much money as you get attention." -- L. Ron Hubbard (prosurvival: something that aids or assists you or others)

Prosurvival Attention

You can attract attention by committing a crime, but instead of getting rich, you go to prison. You attracted nonsurvival attention.

You attract prosurvival attention when you first help people with their health, their lifestyle, their careers, their businesses and so on. For example, not long ago, computers began helping people and businesses in many incredible ways. This attracted a lot of attention. As a result, thousands of people in the computer industry became millionaires.

On an individual level, you need to be doing something that is prosurvival to others. You need to be helping your company, your co-workers and your clients or customers.

Attracting Attention

You then attract attention and show how you help people with their survival, happiness and success. As a result, you make money.

Businesses that attract attention succeed. For example, McDonald's and Wal-Mart dominate their industries, yet they continue to spend millions in advertising. In fact, because advertising has never been cheaper, smart companies are promoting themselves like never before!

You, as an individual, can also attract good attention. You simply tell people about your prosurvival product or service. You get people to notice you. You brag it up!

For example, a friendly, helpful car salesman always wore a green hat. Like many salesmen, he truly helped people. All his customers remembered and recommended him, not by his name, but as the "guy in the green hat." The hat gave him prosurvival attention and he wore it every day for over 30 years. Those who knew him claimed he sold more vehicles than anyone else in the history of cars.

Ten Tips For Attracting Attention

Businesses increase their incomes by attracting prosurvival attention with many forms of public relations and marketing activities. You can do the same as an individual with actions like these.

1. Do things that are so beneficial that others are compelled to spread the news.

2. Share stories about how you are helping customers or clients. Tell everyone will listen.

3. Promote something unique about yourself, like the man in the green hat. Stand out from the crowd.

4. Strike up conversations with strangers whenever possible.

5. Spread the news about your good work to everyone at your job, especially your boss.

6. Go to social events and meet as many new people as you can.

7. Get your family and friends to talk about the many ways you help people.

8. Speak in public at every opportunity.

9. Post your prosurvival acts and ideas on the web, such as Facebook, blogs, your website and so on.

10. Look and act like a professional at all times.

Remember: the more attention you attract to your prosurvival activities, the more money you will make.

Start!
